Common questions
ETA vs eVisitor: which one do I need?
It depends on your passport. The ETA (subclass 601) is for citizens of countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore; it is applied through the official Australian ETA mobile app and carries a government application charge. The eVisitor (subclass 651) is for citizens of all 27 EU member states, the UK (standard British Citizen passports), and several other European countries; it has no government application charge and is applied entirely online, including through Tern. Both allow multiple entries, stays of up to three months at a time, and are valid for 12 months. If your passport is from neither group, you will need the Subclass 600 visitor visa, which Tern also handles.
Which passport holders can apply for the eVisitor (subclass 651)?
The eVisitor is available to citizens of all 27 EU member states, the UK (standard British Citizen passports), and several other European countries that are not EU members. Eligibility is determined by passport country, not residency, so you need to be a citizen of an eligible country to apply. Tern checks your passport eligibility as the first step of the application.
How do I apply for the eVisitor, and how does Tern fit in?
The eVisitor is applied for entirely online. With Tern, you scan your passport (which fills in your details automatically), answer a short set of questions, and Tern checks your application for errors before submitting it directly with the Department of Home Affairs. Most eVisitor applications are decided within minutes, and your visa grant is sent to you by email.
Why apply for the eVisitor through Tern instead of going direct?
Tern's application process is built and maintained by an Australian immigration lawyer, with real-time checks that catch errors and eligibility issues before your application is submitted. The Department's own portal has no such checks. Common mistakes, like mismatched passport details or incorrect answers, can cause a refusal or delay that could have been avoided. Tern also handles submission for you and provides multi-language support across 37 languages.
How long does eVisitor approval take?
Most eVisitor applications are decided within minutes of submission. In some cases, additional checks mean the decision takes longer, but the majority are granted the same day. Tern provides an estimated grant time when you start your application based on real decision data.
How long can I stay in Australia on an eVisitor, and how many times can I enter?
The eVisitor allows multiple entries to Australia for the duration of the visa, which is typically 12 months from the date of grant. Each stay must not exceed three months at a time. You can travel in and out of Australia as many times as you like within the 12-month validity period, as long as each individual stay is three months or less.
Can I work on an eVisitor?
No. The eVisitor is a visitor visa and does not permit work in Australia. It allows tourism, visiting friends or family, and certain business visitor activities such as attending conferences or meetings. If you want to work in Australia, you will need a different visa, such as a Working Holiday visa or an employer-sponsored visa.
What if my eVisitor application is not approved?
If the Department refuses your eVisitor, Tern's service fee is refunded. The eVisitor has no government application charge, so there is no government fee at risk. Tern's error-check before submission is designed to catch issues that would cause a refusal before they reach the Department.
