Am I eligible for an Australian Working Holiday visa?
To be eligible, you generally need to be between 18 and 30 years old (35 for citizens of certain countries), hold a passport from an eligible country, and meet health and character requirements. Eligible passport countries vary by subclass: the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is available to citizens of countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and others. The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) is available to citizens of countries including the United States, China, Vietnam, Thailand, and others, and some 462 countries have an annual cap. What is the difference between the Working Holiday (417) and Work and Holiday (462) visas?
Both allow you to work and holiday in Australia for up to 12 months (extendable to a second and third year), but they are available to different passport holders and have some differences in conditions. The 417 is available to citizens of a set of countries predominantly in Europe, the UK, and some parts of Asia and the Pacific. The 462 covers a different set of countries, including the United States and several Southeast and South Asian countries. Some 462 countries also have an annual government-set cap on places, and a few use a ballot process to allocate those places. The right subclass for you is determined by your passport country.
How does the 462 ballot work, and does Tern support ballot countries?
For some passport countries, the Australian government allocates a limited number of subclass 462 places through a ballot (a random invitation draw). Eligible applicants register their interest and are then selected by ballot before they can submit a visa application. Tern currently supports Working Holiday visa applications for non-ballot pathways. If your country uses a ballot for the 462, Tern is not able to assist with that specific application. What work can I do on a Working Holiday visa?
A Working Holiday visa allows you to work for any employer in Australia, but with one significant condition: you can only work for the same employer for up to six months. There are no restrictions on the type of work you can do, though visa holders often work in hospitality, agriculture, retail, and other industries.
